MINING SECTOR: VENTILATION FAN ENERGY REDUCTION

Energy Drive has collaborated with a client in the mining sector to achieve a 61.95% energy reduction on surface ventilation fans in Gauteng. On one shaft, two fans consumed 14.3 GWh per year. The optimized VSD system is achieving these savings whilst safely maintaining the ventilation requirements of the mine.
The ventilation system consists of two fans directly coupled to two 2240 kW induction motors. Prior to Energy Drive integration, this system would run one fan at a time, with the second fan as a standby unit. Flow was regulated by means of Inlet Guide Vanes (IGVs).
When approached by the mine, Energy Drive identified the opportunity to run both fans simultaneously, reducing the speed on both to achieve the same flow rates previously provided by one duty fan.
With the system fully commissioned, a comprehensive flow test was performed which validated that the new system provided the flow rates that the shaft originally experienced.
Over a 5-year contract term, this is expected to result in 60.23% kWh savings, and a total of 45.1 GWh.
